The Story of PUMA

PUMA is one of the world’s top sports brands, and many people love its sneakers. Through the years it has established its firm fanbase by leaps and bounds. From young to old every person enjoys comfortable and fashionable shoes and other products designed by PUMA.  But do you know how and when PUMA started? And where does PUMA make its shoes? In this interesting and historical article, I will tell you these answers and some interesting facts about PUMA’s history and production.

When Was PUMA Founded?

PUMA was started in 1948 by Rudolf Dassler, who was the older brother of Adolf “Adi” Dassler, who started Adidas. The two brothers had a shoe factory together called Gebrüder Dassler Schuhfabrik (Dassler Brothers Shoe Factory) in 1924, which was the only place that made sports shoes at that time.

They made their shoes in their mother’s laundry in the town of Herzogenaurach, Germany. They used a bike to power their machines because there was not enough electricity at that time. They also drove from Bavaria to the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin with a suitcase full of spikes and got United States sprinter Jesse Owens to wear them, the first time an African American got sponsored.

But the two brothers did not get along well and had many problems. They decided to split in 1948 and make their own companies, Adidas and PUMA. After they split, Rudolf first called his company Ruda (from Ru dolf Da ssler), but later changed it to PUMA. PUMA’s first logo was a square and beast jumping through a D, which he registered with the company’s name in 1948. PUMA’s shoes and clothes have the PUMA logo and the “Formstrip” that he made in 1958.

PUMA’s first big thing for football was in 1952 when it made the Super Atom – the first football boot with screw-in studs. After that, PUMA sponsored many famous athletes and teams, like Pelé, Diego Maradona, Usain Bolt, Serena Williams, Manchester City, Borussia Dortmund, and AC Milan. PUMA also worked with celebrities and designers, like Rihanna, Jay-Z, Selena Gomez, Alexander McQueen, and Karl Lagerfeld.

Where are PUMA Shoes Made?

PUMA manufactures its shoes in different countries, like Vietnam, China, Indonesia, Cambodia, Romania, and Bangladesh. The company is based in Germany and is the third biggest sportswear maker in the world. It chooses the country to make its shoes based on how much it costs for workers, materials, and taxes. Vietnam and China are the main places that make PUMA shoes.

Vietnam makes more of the evoSPEED SL, the newest football boot. PUMA does not say where it makes its products on its website. But you can see where they are made on the product itself. This is because US laws and EU rules say brands have to say where their products are made for things that come from other countries.

But this does not mean that PUMA shoes are bad quality or cheap. PUMA has high standards for how good its products are and how they treat people and the environment. According to its website, PUMA works with outside people to check that its suppliers follow its rules and goals.

Why PUMA makes its shoes in different countries

PUMA makes its shoes in different countries for different reasons. One reason is to save money. It costs less to make shoes in some countries than others. For example, it costs less to pay workers and buy materials in Vietnam and China than in Germany. Another reason is to be closer to customers. It is faster and easier to ship shoes from some countries than others.

For example, it is faster and easier to ship shoes from China to Asia than from Germany. A third reason is to have more options. It can make different kinds of shoes in different countries. For example, it can make more advanced shoes in Vietnam than in Bangladesh.

PUMA’s sustainability approach and governance

PUMA’s sustainability approach is based on four pillars: Fair Play, Creative Play, Safe Play, and Sustainable Play.
